Anhydrous calcium chloride, also known as ice calcium, is used as a refrigerant, antifreeze, fire extinguisher, and road de-icing agent.
Product Details
Colorless crystals; commercial product appears as white, grayish-white, or slightly yellow flakes or chunks. Soluble in water and alcohol, insoluble in ether. Aqueous solution is neutral to slightly alkaline. Heated to 260°C, it loses water of crystallization to form anhydrous calcium chloride and exhibits strong hygroscopicity. Used as a refrigerant, antifreeze, and fire extinguishing agent; for de-icing and snow melting; manufacturing anhydrous calcium chloride; flame retardant for cotton textiles; coagulant in rubber production; accelerates concrete hardening and enhances frost resistance of construction mortar.
